Just two hours from my base at San Cristobal de las Casas lies the Chiapas capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez, and on the outskirts of this city lies a remarkable natural phenomenon, the Canon Sumidero. What I remember most about the trip was the break-neck speed at which the boats that took us through the canon, raced along the river. Apart from the obvious grandeur of 1000m high cliffs on either side, we were taken inside a narrow cave with a sizeable bat population, shown a strange limestone formation aptly called the Christmas Tree and given time to film a lazing crocodile on the river. It was a good long trip, and it was lunchtime before we headed back and stopped off for a short look around the nearby town of Chiapa de Corzo. Before arriving back in San Cristobal we stopped briefly at the indigenous community at Nachig. This was interesting but quite small fry compared with what was to greet me the next day.
